MEDIATION DENSITY

Not all concepts require the same amount of human machinery to exist. Mediation Density measures how many layers of rendering stand between us and the thing.

ACTIVE — survives falsification

The Observation
Granite
Exists quite happily without any of the following. Stubbornly itself.
language institutions culture identity law coordination
Granite remained annoyingly granite.
Professionalism
Evaporates if you remove any of the following. Almost entirely composed of mediation.
language norms institutions expectations coordination hierarchy
Remove the coordination. The concept collapses.
What It Measures
How many layers of rendering stand between us and the thing?
NOT
Truth — a highly mediated concept can still be completely real.
NOT
Importance — mortality is low density and about as important as anything gets.
NOT
Complexity — the measure is about dependency on rendering, not inherent difficulty.

The Density Spectrum
HIGH
LOW
HIGH DENSITY
Exists only inside coordination
Remove the human machinery and the concept collapses. These are almost entirely made of mediation.
MONEY PROFESSIONALISM STAKEHOLDER CAPITALISM REPUTATION AI PRIVACY CREDIT SCORE
MEDIUM DENSITY
Some substrate, some rendering
Hard to cleanly separate. Real substrate forces are present but they arrive heavily shaped by rendering.
CHILDHOOD FAMILY BEAUTY INTELLIGENCE PAIN GENDER
LOW DENSITY
Remains recognizable without humans
These are largely what they are regardless of whether any human systems exist to process them.
GRANITE GRAVITY PHOTOSYNTHESIS BLOOD PRESSURE MORTALITY ENTROPY

The Strange Possibility
Mediation Density may not be a property of the concept.
It may be a property of the relationship between humans and the concept.

If that's true, the density of a concept is not fixed. It shifts as human systems change. Money's density in 1200 CE is different from its density in 2026. The measurement is historical, not ontological. That is a much stranger possibility than it looks.

Implication: the same concept can change density within a single lifetime. Something that was low-density (like breath, or sunlight) can become high-density as it gets absorbed into markets, medical records, carbon credits.
Open Question

Is there a floor on density? Can any concept have zero mediation — or does the act of naming it already add a layer? The moment granite becomes "granite," something has been added.
