Money is a coordination technology humans use to manage scarcity.
Modern money has almost no intrinsic worth. A banknote is paper; a bank balance is a number in a database. Since the abandonment of metal backing, currency is fiat — valuable by declaration and acceptance, not by substance. A unit of money is worth something for one reason only: the well-founded expectation that other people will accept it tomorrow for the same reason they accept it today. The belief is circular, and the circularity is the point.
What money does is compress. An open-ended web of incommensurable judgments — how scarce a thing is, how much effort it took, how risky it is, how much someone wants it — is collapsed into a single comparable number. Compression of this kind is enormously efficient: it lets strangers coordinate without sharing values, history, or trust. But every compression discards information, and the discarded information (why something matters, what it cost, who it harms) does not disappear. It is simply no longer visible in the price.
The reason this fiction behaves like a force is the network effect. Because nearly everyone accepts money, refusing it is ruinously expensive, which makes acceptance rational, which is why nearly everyone accepts it. The belief is distributed across millions of people and is self-reinforcing — and a self-reinforcing convention held by everyone at once is, functionally, indistinguishable from a law of nature. You cannot personally opt out of a Schelling point that the whole society is standing on.
This is why a symbolic layer transmits force into the biological one. Access to food, shelter, medicine, and time is routed through the token, so a shortage of the fiction produces hunger, exposure, and stress physiology in the body. The abstraction is weightless; the consequences are not. That is the mechanism beneath "secondary resistance transmits force all the way into primary resistance" — there is no firewall between the agreement and the flesh.
The working theory encounters strong resistance. Beyond the properties already catalogued, the anomalies compound where the symbolic layer reaches into the body.
This resistance reveals a profound anomaly: a system everyone knows is invented, yet no single person can opt out of. Belief is optional for the individual and mandatory for the collective.
